COPING WITH TRAUMA (Post traumatic stress)
Have you recently experienced a traumatic incident?
This may leave you feeling shocked and confused.
NORMAL REACTIONS INCLUDE
feeling
- numb
- tearful
- emotional
- nervous
- isolated
- angry
- irritable
- helpless
- relief
- guilt
YOU MAY ALSO
be
- unable to sleep
- having repetitive thoughts, flashbacks or nightmares
- unable to concentrate
- easily startled
- unable to cope at work
- withdrawing from people
- drinking too much or taking drugs
If these reactions do not disappear within 4 to 6 weeks you need to see your GP or a counsellor
DO'S AND DON'T'S
Do
- stick to your normal routine
- eat regularly
- take some exercise
- go back to work
- talk about the incident
Don't
- bottle up your feelings
- isolate yourself
- get too tired
- miss meals
- drink too much or take unprescribed drugs
Remember, your system has undergone a shock, be kind to yourself, give yourself time to recover.
