  COPING WITH TRAUMA (Post traumatic stress)

Have you recently experienced a traumatic incident?
This may leave you feeling shocked and confused.

NORMAL REACTIONS INCLUDE
feeling
  • numb
  • tearful
  • emotional
  • nervous
  • isolated
  • angry
  • irritable
  • helpless
  • relief
  • guilt
YOU MAY ALSO
be
  • unable to sleep
  • having repetitive thoughts, flashbacks or nightmares
  • unable to concentrate
  • easily startled
  • unable to cope at work
  • withdrawing from people
  • drinking too much or taking drugs
If these reactions do not disappear within 4 to 6 weeks you need to see your GP or a counsellor


DO'S AND DON'T'S

Do
  • stick to your normal routine
  • eat regularly
  • take some exercise
  • go back to work
  • talk about the incident
Don't
  • bottle up your feelings
  • isolate yourself
  • get too tired
  • miss meals
  • drink too much or take unprescribed drugs
Remember, your system has undergone a shock, be kind to yourself, give yourself time to recover.
